Worm Gear Model – nearly done

Mon, 25 Oct 2010

I've put together a nearly finished version of the worm gear model.

There are 24 teeth on the main gear so it takes twenty four turns of the handle for one complete revolution of the main gear.

I have a few small changes to make to the layout then I'll be putting it together as a downloadable.

After that I'm planning to make an automata with the worm gear at its core. A snail is the model that springs to mind but I'm wondering if that is too obvious…

    Way cool!
    ‘Course could turn

    Way cool!

'Course could turn it on its side and have  a hound chasing a fox.

Would be very PC ' cause the hound never catches the fox '-)

OR depending on how you look at it, the fox is chasing the hound!

    great job..   i kinda figured

great job..   i kinda figured it was just a matter of time before you made your way to the worm gear..  i was actually working on one 2 months ago..  i ended up using a 2in dia core from a roll of dylux proofing paper..   the math was easy, but getting the paper to flow in the curved plane started to make it look tacky..  then again, i was working with both faces of the thread..   your single-faced approach should work fine..

    Happy Animating!!
