Returning to our ferry after a successful visit to Frankfurt we stopped over in the beautiful town of Limburg. On a walk down by the river we came across this delightful old water wheel that had been pressed it use generating electricity. The wheel on the right looks like an original with wooden slats and a metal frame, the blue box to the left is part of the generator.

The dial on the post, arrowed, shows how much electricity  is currently being generated. When we visited the wheel was spinning enthusiastically and the pointer on the dial was quivering around the 10kW mark. Not bad at all!

Inside they served excellent soup and beer.

Nice.

Next stop Xanten to check out the workings of the windmill!
