Two Toothed Ratchet – Working Nicely

Tue, 3 May 2011

All the parts of the two-toothed ratchet model are coming together nicely. I've extended the support that guides the pull tab so that the tab is pointing the right direction to move the pawl housing. I forgot to extend the sides hence the pieces sticking out on the bottom right of the picture above – easy to correct.

I've put together this quick animation showing how the model works. I'll put it together as a downloadable model for members, hopefully tomorrow, then I'll work the mechanism into a finished character based model. I have a couple of ideas that could be fun 🙂

I'll tell you what though, I forgot about end stops. I need something that limits the range of motion of the pull tab. I'll have to think about that over night.

How does the pull tab falls

How does the pull tab falls back? Is there a weight at the other end of tab? It looks very interesting in animation – I bet the characters based on this mechanism would be even more.

The tab is pushed back. It

The tab is pushed back. It relies on the stiffness of the card, hence the need for all the supports and guides 🙂
