Slot Together Mechanisms

It turns out that you can cut 1400 micron card in the laser cutter and it looks really neat. As a paper engineer this opens all sorts of possibilities for models and designs. This is a new field for me and I’m now trying to get a few mechanisms and techniques under my belt so that I can apply them to new models.

I’ve started with a simple joint and a gear. I’m away for a couple of days but on my return I’ll be releasing these as downloadable projects for anyone with a laser cutter or sharp knife to try out. Meanwhile here are a couple of Instagram video to keep you going.

That was really creative how you held those gears in place!

I’d love to see more development with the 1400 micron card. I should be able to cut that on my Cricut cutting machine. I’d been looking at the laser cut models wondering how I could adapt them to cut on my machine which can’t cut the thickness of wood ply you were using. I know with more layers I’d be able to do that, but am eagar to see what you figure out using just the card.
