Dog Ate My Recorder

Tue, 17 Nov 2009

Annette Nicolai, a teacher from the Netherlands sent me this wonderous picture!

She teaches recorder and occasionally the children come out with implausible excuses as to why they haven't been practicing. Now, when they come up with an excuse she'll get this model from her desk and crank the handle a couple of times.

"No excuses!"

Thanks very much Annette I was delighted to get you email!

    Hello Rob and Annette

    Hello Rob and Annette Nicolai,

The dog ate my recorder is a scream! Hartstikke leuk! (excuse my Dutch). As a flute teacher (also in the Netherlands) I know what Annette means.

But: Rob, is there a possibility you can make a series of "excuses why I’m late for school" for all our adolescent sons and daughters, especially mine…e.g.:

I couldn’t find my …(chemistry, maths….)…book (no wonder when you see the way the books are lying around in piles)

the bus was late/ the bus was so early it had left before I got to the bus-stop/ the busdriver wouldn’t stop although he saw me running to catch the bus

My bike had a flat tyre/ I couldn’t find my bicycle keys/ my sister had taken my bike by mistake/ my little brother had flushed my bicycle-keys through the toilet

the bridge was open (i.e. boats pass through, traffic has to wait. this is the most-used excuse ever in Holland)

the ferry was slow (when you have to cross a river as I do to my musicschool)

Looking forward to your next idea!

    Irene

Perhaps I should do a set of

Perhaps I should do a set of attachments for the existing model. Recorder, violin, piano leg, bicycle wheel…

Hi Rob, I think this would be

Hi Rob, I think this would be a great idea, although it will mean more work for you.

I am still ever so grateful you provided me with the new texts for the sides of the box.

Initially I tried to change the text myselve (with the help of my son), but it did not come out so nicely as yours; the fun is, of course, that the models stays within your original design and letter type setting.

        Good luck!
