Working on the Website

Sunday 6th Jun 2010 11:43 : PRINT

I'll be spending the next few days finishing off a complete update of the robives.com website. I'm very excited about the new look and new features so I'm keen to get it up and running. I've done most of the background code including the main database which runs the site. I'm now working on the look and feel.

Kuchi-san Mono

Tuesday 6th Jul 2010 17:40 : PRINT

I have modified the Kuchi-san file to include a mono version for those of you who are wanting to either print out a model onto pre-coloured card or colour in your own version of the model.

I'd be delighted to see any new colour schemes or designs that you come up with. As a member you can download the updated file from the original Kuchi-san page.

Dodo layout completed

Wednesday 26th May 2010 19:34 : PRINT

I've been working on a complete redesign of the website, hence the lack of posts. Did you miss me?! Anyway, the new look website is coming along nicely so I thought I'd better spend some time on the dodo before I forgot where I had got too.

Dodo Cam taking shape

Thursday 20th May 2010 20:00 : PRINT

Work on the upcoming Dodo model is coming along nicely. I have created the cam profile that drives the wings and added it to the surround of the crank shaft.

Dodo body

Tuesday 18th May 2010 19:36 : PRINT

Back to the Dodo today! I've been working on the body layout. I started with a hand drawn model then, as per my usual workflow I cut the bits out and dropped them in the scanner.

What you see here is the result after I've transfered the model to the computer. One of the many advantages of a computer based design is their easy editability. I made a model, found it was too small and quickly ran off another copy 20% larger. Easy!

I going to be using the crank slider / cam mechanism in the final model but I'll be adapting the cam to tell a different story. I want a quick burst of flapping followed by a rest so I'll design a cam profile to meet that need.

Everything seems to be going together quite well. Apart form the cam the only parts that I need to complete are the feet!

Kuchi-san complete, come and get it!

Kuchi-san Paper Character

Paper character to download, print out and make. Kuchi is japanese for mouth, san is an honorific suffix, roughly equivalent to mr. So this model is Mr Mouth. Pull up the head, the mouth opens, the tongue pops out and the arms go up.

Kuchi-san is available for members to download at the end of this post.

Character complete and in colour

Thursday 13th May 2010 20:38 : PRINT

I've completed a full color version of the character model and taken the photos for the instructions. It looks great, though I say so myself. I've also updated the shopping cart system so that you can see the files you've ordered in your account. All good stuff!

Colour Character

Wednesday 12th May 2010 18:45 : PRINT

Parts coloured and numbered. I've printed out a set of parts sheets onto card and cut them all out ready to assemble and photograph. Going to finish off the day with a bit of tidying up of the website database then a little light readying on jQuery. Living on the edge :-)

Paper Character Grave Yard!

Tuesday 11th May 2010 18:28 : PRINT

Sometimes the geometry just works, other times, the parts need to be adjusted, tweeked, changed and refined so that the moving parts fit together properly.
