Gears Collections

The Gears Collection.

The collection includes a diverse range of eight gear-based paper models, each with its unique design and functionality. You can find models that feature rack and pinion gears, worm gears, and other types of gears that are commonly used in mechanical systems. These models are available for download and can be easily printed out to create a physical replica made entirely from paper.

You can use these paper models to create complete projects in themselves, or you can customize them to match your preferences and design your personalized paper automata. These projects are not only fun to make, they are also a great way to learn about the mechanics of gears and how they work in machines. With these paper models, you can experiment with different gear configurations and understand the role of gears in different types of mechanical systems

Worm Gear

Turn the handle and the gear advances one tooth at a time. All parts are made from thin card and instructions for construction are available here.

Mesh Gear 12:32

By convention, winder handles are turned clockwise. In this model, the vertical shaft can be made to turn clockwise or anticlockwise depending on how it is assembled. The twelve tooth pinion drives a thirty two tooth gear reducing the speed by almost a third. Build it as an exercise in pure mechanism or as the starting point for another project.

Bevel Gear

Bevel gears are used to convert rotation by ninety degrees. In the project the larger gear means that the the rotation speed is also reduced by about half.

There are clear, fully illustrated instructions for making the model. All the parts you need are ready to print out onto five sheets of photocopier card.

Co-axial Gear

Co-axial planetary gear. As the handle turns and the output shaft turns at half the speed. Use it as a stand-alone paper mechanism or as the drive for your own paper animation kit.

Gear and Crank

Gear and Crank together in perfect harmony. The gear works to reduce the crank speed to just a smidge over a third speed. The gear, in turn, drives the crank making a slow up and down movement. Use as the starting point for your own character based automata or as an exercise in pure mechanism.

Two Stage Gear

This project is for a two stage reduction gear with a crank output. The mechanism is fitted into an almost square topped box with the output crank close to the centre of the box top. The gear reduction is close to 4.5 : 1
