Fluttering Bat to Download and Make

Turn the handle on the Fluttering Bat and the body swoops whilst the wings flutter!

Print out the four sheets onto thin card (230gsm/67lb) Note that the sheets have a front and back. Print out the front, flip the card, return it to your printer and print out the back. Let the ink dry completely before proceeding.

Score all the dotted and dashed lines and cut out the holes then carefully cut out the parts.

Fold over the wing ends and glue them down to make double thickness card.

Thread the wing into the slot on the side of the body then locate it into place by glueing on the wing end. The wing should be free to move easily.

Starting from the body ends with the tab, glue the sides into place. Note that the slots are furthest away from the body.

Roll round and complete the body.

Glue on the eyes and ears as shown.

Make up the cams from double thickness card.

Make the pushrod ends from double thickness card.

Roll up and glue down the four axle tubes.

Fold over and glue down the spacers.

Thread the shortest axle tube through the two crank ends and glue them to the end of the push rod. 

Make up the two crank pieces.

Fold up and make the handle.

Fit the cranks to the axle. 

Assemble the four square section tubes.

Assemble the cam follower assembly as shown. 

Glue the other two spaces to another slider tube as shown.

Glue a cam into position as shown.

Fit the other cam to the other side.

Slide the cam follower assembly, centre slider and top slider as shown.

Link together the spacers with the link pieces as shown.

Find a small coin to act as a weight. A UK penny, 20mm diameter, 4gram weight, is ideal. Wrap it tightly in an offcut of card.

Glue the coin to the cam follower assembly as shown.

Fold round and glue the tabs on the box side to make right angle triangles.

Fold round and glue the tabs on the top and base on the box as shown.

Glue the sides to the base.

Fit the axle tubes into place glueing them into place.

Assemble the box around the crank assembly. Glue the centre slider tube to the tab on the box top.

Fit the bat to the top of the push rod.

Fold over the wing pushrods to make double thickness card and glue the tabs to the underside of the wings.

Glue the other end of the wing pushrods to the link pieces then glue on the handle to complete the model.
