Car Prototype
Thu, 19 Oct 2017Last week I sketched out the idea for a model based around one of the Essential Mechanisms available on this site. You can see the sketch on my Instagram feed here. Today I have been making a working prototype.
The main mechanism used is a crank slider. Turn the handle and crank lifts the car in a circle so that it bobs up and down, back and forth. By fixing the legs top and bottom it appears that it is actually the legs moving the car.
Front view of the crank. In the next version I will be slightly decreasing the throw of the crank so that the car doesn’t dip down quite as far.
Not bad for a first draft though 🙂
I almost always get a giggle when I come over to your website, Rob. This leggy car got a snort!
Question: If you create your designs in Illustrator, is there anyway you can offer the Illustrator files for download or such. I ask because my hands don’t work well and I use an electronic cutter. However, to use the cutter, I have to download your PDF files, export them to images, then hand-trace the image using Illustrator (Illustrator’s automatic trace function isn’t very good). I could skip a few steps, if you offered the Illustrator files as well as the PDFs. Thanks for your consideration. Keep up the silly work!
You can import the pdf file straight into illustrator. No need to convert it to a jpeg. You can then delete the colour layer leaving only the cut lines.
Thank you! The things I don’t know about Illustration are many.
