searching for an automated zoetrope

hello..

i have been a member of this gentle corner of the world for 2 years and two weeks..

in all that time..i have searched  and searched for a paper automated zoetrope ..

the nearest was a contraption made from a cd and a lipsil... ingenious but still  i had to push the cd...

when i saw rob ives turbine my eyes lit up..lol..not for long..that was squashed to smithereens light years ago..

so

i would really like a zoetrope you can wind or bellows or SOMETHING..other than pushing it round..

does any one out there know of one...

i had to ask .... thankyou ..anyway for a great site ....and a great bunch of people.. thank you all.   T.

Zoetrope to go.

How "automated" do you want it to be?
First you have to make it!

This should get you started :- http://www.groeg.de/puzzles/zoetrope.html

There is a link to a blank PDF template, so you could use something like Paint Shop Pro's Animation Studio, or Xara's Graphic Designer to work out your frames and see them 'running' before you print them.

To set the scene in motion try a local model shop, I have seen battery powered gearboxes
that I'm sure they will be able to help you get one that rotates at a viewable pace.

Hope this helps.

Zoetrope stuff.

Ah well, now I've got a "gal" interested I've done a bit of research and found a nice little Arduino project that is right up Rob's street.
(He's a bit of a boffin with electronics on the quiet)
How good are you with a soldering iron?

Zoetrope link

Hi trish,

Here is a link to a zoetrope that I made once out of paper.

http://www.reframingphotography.com/content/animating-photographs

The instructions recommend some things that aren't paper, but you will find that they can be replaced with strong card!

Once I had made the zoetrope I made a hole in the middle which I put an elastic band through.

When you turn the zoetrope the elastic band twists and once it has been wound up enough you let go and the elastic band unwinds so you can watch the zoetrope spin round!

It is now hanging from my ceiling in my bedroom and it's the first thing I do every morning, watching a unicycle bunny hop as the zoetrope unwinds!

I hope this is of some use to you!

Best wishes,

Tank Commander

Glad to help!

Hi trish,

Glad that I was able to help you! Cooking isn't one of my strong points either. If only all food could be made like Rob's fantastic banana, I would find cooking much more enjoyable then ! :-P

Hope it works out for you, keep us posted on how you get on!

Best wishes,

Tank Commander :-)

hi not good... 3 zoetropes

hi

not good...

3 zoetropes down.... hrrrmph.

the first one i put a hole in the base that moves.

i put a matchstick inside the base with the laggyband looped over and threaded thru the base.

next problem..

it needed some sort of pedestal / handle to pass the laggyband thru and still be able to hold the zoetrope...

bogroll...yeaaaaa..blue peter and tony hart,..eat your heart out... i threaded the laggy band thru the bogroll

i stuck a pencil thru the loop of the laggy band for turning and turned...

the band pulls the base too hard against the bog roll so it will not turn...

i went thru 3 zoetropes like this two crumbled because they were too flimsy but the third held up...

but still will not turn.. i havent given up .i have a zoetrope made from a cd as the base..its just getting past the laggyband clamping the base to the handle ..

i have got all sorts of lengths of laggy... .... ....AAAAAaaaaawwwwwwwwwwWWWWW
