I'm trying to utilize a similar mechanism but want it to do a 180 degree rotation between steps. Any ideas on how to accomplish that? On an automaton, I'm trying to make a vertical sign rotate from "for sale" to "sold" every once in a while (a 180 degree rotation).

Scott, check out the various Flip Face posts, I think they'll cover what you are after. - RI
How long does it normally take to process an order? I'm curious because I just ordered a copy today.
Tamara
To be honest, longer than it should. I've had issues with supply of materials which have caused some delay - sorry! That said, I'm now caught up so the last CDs from the backlog should be shipping out tomorrow and yours in in the batch Tamara. - RI
Here is a drawing. A tip: The number of oscillations depends on the flexibility and strength of the paper hinge. Good to use is thin origami - paper or tracing paper tear-resistant. The weight (coin)is variable.
Thanks for the replies. I've tried to make a video outdoors. Unfortunately, the melted snow and strong wind, the birds would fly away. A little short video to see this once at Flickr.
Hey guys im a robo nerd and im hoping to create a human like robot what sort of mechanisms could i use for the fingers??? i was thinking of using recipricating mechanisms
It has been a pleasure to build this bird model. After a tip from Smelter and umetha I have for the blue bird as a brother an oriole, created. The motion carried by a paper- pendulum rod with weight. They are longer in motion time, but not as elegant as the original. The nod is limited by the width of the box.I have the line pattern with black wings printed on thin yellow paper.
Michael
Nice work Michael! Do you have a diagram of how you changed the pendulum in the yellow bird? - RI
rob, i just love you. seriously. imlookin forward to a lot more of these gearworks from you for i am recently also building a clock by gluechronicle which is based on such gears and waiting for more gears from you since i discovered your page the first time.
I use 180 grams (or a bit thicker: 200) paper when I print automata or models. I have an HP photosmart printer which easily takes that thickness. I don't know if a laserprinter will take 180 grms paper. I guess it's a matter of trying out. Good luck!
Astromedia.de have a very posh-looking periscope in black and gold (as well as several telescopes and a microscope), but I'm sure there are simpler ways of making one, e.g. from a milk carton.
IMHO, you should set up a page for paper animations - then we can "like" the page and see all your updates, but you won't be clogging up your personal FB with stuff from people you don't know.

That is soooo Cool! Will we be able to set any combination we want?
You'll probably be able to set the combination on building but it won't be possible to change it aferwards. - RI
An actual safe lock mechanism is impressive, I've seen a cryptex before but that's simpler.
gonna be awesome.
I hope so :-) - RI

A simple video is uploaded to Flickr this time.

Michael,
A youtube video of your bird pair would be nice. They look beautiful together and the background snow-tree-trunk is also good.

I'll second that! - RI
Wow! Even your packaging is cool!
Cool, Rob!,
I am one of those in waiting...but in this deal, the waiting is worth because it adds more everyday one waited.
Thanks,
Thanks for your patience, it'll be with your soon. - RI

Oops - I'd included the wrong size handle in the file. re -download for the correct version.

Thanks Machina - Happy Valentine's day :-) - RI
The flip face model can be equipped with others rotating images. A simple square shaft with glued image is inserted into the axis of the cross wheel.
A short video on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhEn1q3O4A

I like it! Thanks Michael - RI
This should do what you are looking for :-

Warm water (lots of it), pinch of salt and a small piece of ginger all day.
Hope you feel better soon.
Thanks :-) Feeling better already. - RI

How much work would it be Rob, to put the pendulum inside the bird?
You could then loose the linking rod from base.
Should prove to be quite a balancing act!
Interesting! I'll give it a try and report back... Meanwhile, I'm hoping to make a model with a pair of birds - love birds for Valentine's day - RI

Thank you Rob,
Like Jane has done, there is a possibility to add variety of colors and patterns to this model and make a family of birds.
That would be lovely! - RI
