Steve Seidl from frankenpaper.com sent me these pictures of a double Archimedes screw that he has put together. I've printed out the parts to have a go myself and will post the results later on. 

I'd come to a sort of over complicated dead end in my experiments on this problem, it looks like Steve has found a clear and simple way forward. Thanks Steve!
